A notable theme of Hitchcock’s films are often very specific places and locales. For example, he often filmed in locations famous for a specific holiday or occasion. The most famous example of this is the shot of the London Bridge in Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, where the bridge is seen as a visual link to Paris, the city where the couple murders a man. But did you know that Hitchcock also filmed The Birds in Key West, Florida? Hitchcock is known for his interest in the tropics, and he was actually quite interested in exploring Florida. Key West was interesting to him as a location because it was famous as a gay capital. Hitchcock actually filmed scenes of The Birds in Key West in September of 1963. The shot of the congregation of birds on the church steps can be seen in the film. In fact, Hitchcock was interested in filming in Key West because it had been made into a movie already. Hitchcock visited Key West in 1962, and he paid one man named Ed Strong $3,000 to allow the cameras to film in his bar. In fact, Strong was one of the men who actually died in the real-life attack. Hitchcock became friends with Strong and even spent the night at his home.
